“Happiness comes, not only through my family, but also from my community work! Being a part of Happy Club brings me lots of joy and enables me to make many new friends!”
Mandy Teo, 61 Happy Club Volunteer, Taman Jurong
“Seniors-for-seniors” is a community-based outreach programme that provides seniors with a space to interact and build meaningful friendships. It also enables personal and community development and seeks to promote positive attitudes towards ageing.
This programme enables seniors to learn for the community and learn from the community. YAH! believes that seniors can be empowered to lead and drive the various community-based programmes and make impact in the society. Through this programme, seniors will develop the spirit of sharing and compassion. It is also envisioned that YAH! seniors will become strong advocates in promoting and advancing the concept of active ageing in the community.
The programme is self-initiated; “by the seniors, for the seniors”. It draws upon the knowledge, experience and skills of YAH! seniors to organise and share their skills and knowledge in areas that they are good in. Seniors are also encouraged to take up the ownership of community projects to share their interest and skills as well as care for those needy in the community.
Before YAH! seniors embark on their projects, their training needs are assessed and appropriate training will be provided.
Working in close collaboration with other Montfort Care programmes as well as other Voluntary Welfare Organisations, YAH! seniors started reading programmes for children with disabilities, organised outreach activities to isolated seniors living in the community, supported care givers as well as conducted problem gambling prevention to the local and foreign communities.
